The container ship CONTSHIP JET sank overnight after being hit by maritime drones off Cape Kaliakra on 28 October. All 18 crew members were rescued and brought to Varna. The immediate focus has shifted from saving the sailors to assessing the hazards left by the vessel and its cargo.
The sinking was reported on the morning of 29 October, with confirmation from vessel-traffic control and the Maritime Administration relayed by the Varna regional administration. The Liberian-flagged ship had been travelling from Haifa to Constanța.
The crew reported 421 containers aboard. Around 20 were reported to have fallen into the sea and to be drifting, creating a potential danger to other vessels. Ships have been warned to watch for floating containers. Their presence does not by itself establish the full contents of the cargo or prove that pollution has occurred.
The official rescue chronology places the initial alert at 12:01 on 28 October and the crew’s departure from the ship at 12:13. Three Bulgarian Navy vessels and a Border Police ship were directed to the area. The navy reported that all 18 crew members had been rescued by 13:45.
The defence ministry says three impacts were observed, including by naval surveillance and a French maritime patrol aircraft. The verified material does not establish who carried out the attack. A confirmed strike must be distinguished from an independently established attribution.
The next questions concern the cargo manifest, the location of drifting containers and any environmental consequences. Those require operational information and, where relevant, sampling; they should not be replaced by assumptions based solely on the sinking. The photograph is an archive image of a different container vessel, not a picture of CONTSHIP JET or the attack.
