Coherent reported revenue of $2.37 billion for the first quarter of its 2027 financial year, up 50% from a year earlier. The results were announced on 4 November for the quarter ended 30 September 2026.
The company supplies photonics technologies used in communications, data centres and industrial applications. Its performance puts a different part of the AI infrastructure chain in view: not only the chips that compute, but the optical connections that move data.
Moving information becomes a growth business
Management highlighted the transition from copper to optical connectivity in AI data centres. Faster computing needs ways to exchange increasing amounts of information, making bandwidth and energy efficiency important design constraints.
The financial results show higher revenue alongside improved gross margins. The GAAP gross margin reached 39.1%, while diluted earnings per share were $1.90. Adjusted figures were higher, and should be considered alongside rather than substituted for the accounting results.
The next quarter is still a forecast
Coherent expects revenue of $2.55 billion to $2.75 billion in the following quarter. The company also set longer-term targets, but those remain management expectations rather than revenue already earned.
For the sector, the question is how sustained demand for optical infrastructure will translate into profitable deliveries. The latest report establishes a strong quarter; future results must show whether production, customer demand and margins can continue to move together.
