The reported toll rises

Abyei caretaker information minister Yohana Akol Ngor told Reuters on 20 October that 153 people had died after Monday’s drone strike at Amiet market, up from an earlier 73. Fires complicated recovery. This is a local official’s reported count, not an independently established final toll. [1]

Responsibility remains contested

Ngor blamed Sudan’s army. AP reported that an unnamed senior Sudanese military officer acknowledged a strike on fuel tankers he said were supplying the RSF. That account does not independently establish the target or the identities of those killed. The competing descriptions must remain attributed. [2]

The humanitarian picture

Reuters reported that MSF was treating more than 20 wounded people, including burn patients, at Ameth Bek Hospital. The market lies in a region claimed by Sudan and South Sudan, beside a war that began in April 2023. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned the drone attacks, according to Reuters. [1]

Why the uncertainty matters

Nove.news context: casualty estimates after a major fire can change as recovery continues. A preliminary number should not be treated as a complete list of identified victims. Equally, a claim that fuel was intended for an armed force does not establish who was present in a crowded trading area. Hospital records, burial information, witness accounts and independently verified imagery serve different purposes and need to be compared rather than merged into a single unqualified figure.

What needs to be established

The immediate priorities for reporting are access to treatment, safe movement for residents and a reconciled account of the dead and missing. An assessment of the strike also needs evidence about the intended target, the weapons used and the surrounding civilian activity. This report does not claim an independent investigation at the scene. The accompanying aerial photograph is archival and shows neither the attack nor its aftermath.
