AI accelerates cyberattacks. Finance is in the crosshairs.

Financially motivated attackers are using the ARTEX agentic AI framework to accelerate intrusions against financial organisations. Microsoft’s 6 November threat report describes activity by the cluster it tracks as Storm-3358, primarily targeting Southeast Asia and some large organisations elsewhere.

The observed operations combine AI agents with conventional hacking tools. They scan internet-facing systems, exploit vulnerable web applications and abuse compromised identities. The report describes persistence and data theft rather than a single publicly identified bank outage.

Speed changes the defensive challenge

Automation can shorten the interval between finding an exposed system and exploiting it. That makes the organisation of defence important: an alert that sits without an owner may be less useful than a smaller set of warnings connected to a response process.

The activity does not mean an AI agent can compromise every system. Attackers still need exploitable weaknesses or credentials. Basic controls such as maintaining supported software, restricting exposed services and limiting privileges remain relevant even when part of the attack is automated.

Identity is part of the perimeter

A stolen cloud identity may allow an attacker to operate through apparently legitimate access. Defenders therefore need to examine unusual behaviour as well as malware files. The question is not only what was installed, but which account accessed which data and whether that access was appropriate.

Microsoft has published detection and mitigation guidance with the report. For organisations assessing their own exposure, the useful starting point is their actual configuration and logs. The reported campaign is evidence of a threat pattern, not evidence that every financial institution has been breached.
