The death toll from the attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan’s Karak governorate has risen to eight after another wounded person died. Gunmen opened fire during a funeral in Hamoud on Friday, 23 October.

Security is reinforced

On Saturday, security was stepped up at shopping centres, foreign embassies and other locations across the country. Police continued the search for the attackers. The authorities had not established publicly whether they were linked to a known organisation inside or outside Jordan, and no immediate claim of responsibility had been reported.

The wounded remain in hospital

The attack left dozens injured. The rising death toll reflects a hospital update and replaces the earlier figure carried in this article. Casualty totals issued at different stages should not be added together: they describe the same incident as medical information develops.

Mourning and unanswered questions

Three days of national mourning began on 23 October. The attack struck people gathered for a religious service in a country where such violence is rare. The investigation must establish the identity of the gunmen and any wider support network. Reports of arrests should not be treated as confirmed without an official announcement.
