Bulgaria’s culture minister has said the pay arrangements for Bulgarian National Radio’s musical ensembles will continue beyond the end of the year. The statement follows a government decision allocating an additional €200,000 for the period from 1 October to 31 December.
Evtim Miloshev addressed parliament’s culture and media committee on 5 November. He presented the allocation as a response to unfair treatment of the musicians and said a longer-term solution had been reached through talks involving BNR and the finance and culture ministries.
This year’s money and next year’s promise
The immediate allocation and the commitment for the following budget are different stages. Money approved for the final quarter addresses the current period; continuation next year still needs to be reflected in the relevant budget arrangements.
That distinction matters for an ensemble planning rehearsals, performances and employment beyond a single season. An additional transfer can close a short-term funding gap, while predictable financing allows artistic programmes and staffing to be planned with greater confidence.
Funding without editorial interference
Miloshev also stressed that a ministry has no right to interfere in the work of an independent media organisation. The point places the funding discussion alongside the institutional independence of the public broadcaster, rather than treating additional money as authority over its decisions.
The next practical test is the budget that follows the minister’s commitment. A durable solution would be visible in how the financing is set out and maintained, not only in the description of the current transfer. The announced support offers an answer for the closing months of 2026; the promised continuation remains an undertaking to be followed through.
