Seven freight wagons carrying ammonium nitrate derailed near the locomotive and wagon works in Ruse. Part of the load spilled, and police opened a pre-trial investigation. The initial alert was received on 30 October, with details made public on 31 October.
Investigators found white granular material in two locations, with a combined weight of about 20 kilograms. Samples were collected from the substance and nearby soil for examination. An operational police team inspected the scene.
The sample-taking is an investigative step. It does not, on its own, establish the extent of any environmental impact or identify the cause of the derailment. The information published so far does not provide a completed technical finding about the track, wagons or handling of the train.
The investigation must establish how the wagons left the rails and whether any failure or breach contributed to the incident. Those questions require evidence from the scene and the relevant technical examinations; the opening of proceedings is not a finding of guilt.
For Ruse, a major rail and logistics centre on the Danube, reliable freight operations are part of everyday economic infrastructure. The next substantive developments will be the examination results and any official explanation of the cause, rather than speculation based only on the type of cargo.
