Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami with his family on 28 October, three days after losing Brazil’s presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His arrival followed a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports in connection with a money-laundering investigation in which he denies wrongdoing.
Reuters television images showed the senator leaving a private jet at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport. The journey took him through Argentina and Ecuador before the flight to Florida, turning the aftermath of the election into a dispute involving courts, migration authorities and relations with Washington.
Argentina’s migration authority confirmed that he entered the country late on 27 October using valid travel documents and subsequently boarded a flight to Guayaquil. A senior US State Department official had said that Bolsonaro and his family would be allowed to enter the United States and receive visas. Donald Trump also expressed approval of his arrival.
The Brazilian order required the surrender of the passports by Tuesday. Reports of the investigation and of his departure do not establish guilt, and permission to enter the United States is not in itself a decision granting asylum. Those distinctions are important as the legal and political consequences of the journey develop.
Bolsonaro had challenged the election result rather than concede. His Liberal Party subsequently acknowledged Lula’s victory. His departure now raises a further question for the Brazilian right: who will lead the opposition at home after a closely watched presidential campaign?
The case also adds friction to Brazil–US relations. Lula criticised the departure, while Trump has repeatedly supported the Bolsonaro family. Their competing positions connect a domestic investigation and an election defeat to a wider diplomatic confrontation, without determining what either country’s courts or authorities will do next.
Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who also went to Florida after losing to Lula in 2022. The parallel is politically striking, but the younger Bolsonaro’s investigation, travel arrangements and eventual legal position must be assessed on their own facts.
